In the case of Mary Gauthier, a few simple words are worth a thousand pictures.
Acclaim has followed Gauthier throughout her career, and the praise has only grown as she has continued to develop as an artist and songwriter. Her 2002 release Filth & Fire was hailed as Independent Album of the Year by the New York Times, and 2005's Mercy Now has been continually 'discovered' by new fans as it has landed on a number of year-end 'best of' lists including those published by the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and No Depression. The album even attracted the notice of legendary songwriter and artist Bob Dylan, who included one of the album's songs on his XM Satellite Radio program.
Gauthier has always been a unique lyricist and possesses the striking ability to illuminate even moments of devastation and despair with subtle hues of beauty and humanity.
Her landmark song "I Drink" caused quite a stir when it was cut by Blake Shelton for his highly successful album Blake Shelton's Barn & Grill. The song wasn't released as a single but gained quite a following and has been rerecorded for an upcoming project from Tim McGraw. Faith Hill is also a fan, having recorded "Mercy Now" for an upcoming project.
Currently, Mary is working on material for her next album on Lost Highway Records, which will serve as a follow-up to the lauded
2007 release Between Daylight and Dark.
